COULD ORTHOMOLECULAR MEDICINE REDUCE MOOD & PSYCHOLOGICALCHALLENGES?

I spent several hours researching two medical doctors that dedicated their lives to treating psychiatric and psychological patients suffering from extreme set
backs using orthomolecular medicine.

The word orthomolecular piqued my interest to learn more about these two doctors, as it’s a word the two created, because they hoped that modern medicine would adapt and use their treatments in their clinics because the results were transformational. Not to mention – patients were getting results with natural minerals and nutrients, without the need of pharmaceutical intervention for life…
Orthomolecular medicine means to use plants, nutrition, nature’s elements and nutrients as medicine.

Dr. Carl Pfiefer, and Dr. Abram Hoffer, in my opinion should be historically known for their treatment protocols created for patients.

Funnily, at one point during the beginning of his research, Dr. Abram Hoffer wanted to see if it was possible to heal alcoholism at his practice, so he would spend several weekends with his mates doing LSD to see if there was a chemical compound released (while on LSD) in the body that would stop one’s chemical addiction to alcohol.

These two doctors are fascinating, and, if it’s of interest, I’ll continue to write about their work because their treatment is legendary for a huge variety of everyday challenges that we experience with anxiety, depression, and especially around behavioural disorders now happening with sensory behavioural disorders in children across the world.

Today, I thought I’d share the findings that years of clinical research at the Princeton Brain Bio Centre provided.
Let’s look at specific trace metal combinations that have been known to cause very common complaints, that may be shrugged off as some kind of depression or anxiety at the doctor’s office.

I wanted to share this with you because our bodies have this beautiful way of telling us that something is wrong.

Small, subtle symptoms enable us to question why these things are happening.

You may connect one or more of your symptoms, or perhaps something happening with your children that could be the symptom of one of these trace metal compounds, which can easily be supported to correct using nutrient
intervention or nutrition.

My goal in sharing this information with you is to open your mind to the idea of using orthomolecular options – if you (or someone close to you) are feeling…

  • more sad than normal,
  • like your heart is racing way more than normal,
  • worried about little things,
  • anxious way more than normal,
  • way more irritable or moody than you’d like to be.

Dr. Pfieffer did a 12-year study which allowed to classify behaviour disorders into four categories based on trace metal patterns:

Type A: High copper/zinc ratio

Dr. Pfieffer found that with a heavy metal and mineral analysis, the patient presents with depressed hair sodium, potassium, and lead sensitivity. With the most notable metal/mineral imbalance being a high copper/zinc ratio.
These individuals exhibit episodes of fighting, oppositional behaviour and mood swings.

Type B: Depressed hair copper, pyroluria, elevated histamine and elevated toxic metals.

low levels of both vitamin B6 and zinc
They exhibit assaultive behaviour, absence of remorse, pathological lying, fascination with fire and cruelty towards animals.

Type C: Mal absorbers

They tend to be slender, usually impulsive and oppositional.

Type D: Depressed manganese and chromium levels.

They exhibit nonviolent delinquent behaviour.
Now these four types are classified mental disorders. These metal and mineral recordings were often taken to patients that were in a psychiatric facility or being treated for a psychiatric condition.

Both Dr. Carl Pfiefer, and Dr. Abram Hoffer worked together to go one step further on mood irregularities and mental health in everyday people. Together, the two discovered pyrrole disorder or pyroluria.

The condition begin to present itself more commonly in everyday people experiencing depression, anxiety, irritability, and mental health issues that were a real struggle to live with.

They coined the term “pyroluria and pyrolle disorder” because individuals may have 5 – 10 times more pyrroles than are usually produced. Normally excreted in the urine, a pyrrole is a byproduct of hemoglobin synthesis and has no known function in the body.
Hemoglobin is the molecule that carries oxygen in blood.
Pyrroles have an affinity for aldehydes including vitamin B6 and zinc, binding to them in large numbers. They are then excreted in the urine, meaning that the zinc and vitamin B6 nutrients are no longer available for their usual biological roles.
Thanks to their diagnosis, we are able to intervene and help patients when changes in mood appear in combination of other symptoms like joint pain, frequent infections, allergies, or fatigue.
One of the key similarities Dr. Carl Pfiefer, and Dr. Abram Hoffer discovered in patients with pyrolles was a mauve coloured urine.
Today, many practitioners and integrative doctors across the world have found pyrolles when testing patients that suffer from ADHD, ADD, and Autism. The beautiful thing is that because of the establishment of orthomolecular medicine and the psychiatric research by these amazing men, our naturopathic clinic is able to help patients early on before mental health or moods decline to a point where it begins to effect quality of life or the relationships of the
people around you.
Many of our patients that suffered from undiagnosed pyroluria were also experiencing fatigue, joint pain, poor short-term memory, little to no dream recall,
allergies, and sometimes susceptibility to infections.

We pride ourselves in the amount of being a multi-modality clinic and believe it’s one of the key drivers to our success today. It’s amazing how large of an impact nutrient, metal, and mineral levels can be having on your mood and emotions.
